The Foucault–Habermas debate is a dispute concerning whether Michel Foucault's ideas of "power analytics" and "genealogy" or Jürgen Habermas' ideas of "communicative rationality" and "discourse ethics" provide a better critique of the nature of power in society.

In particular, it argues that Habermas's concept of deliberative democracy can and should be complemented by a strategic analysis of the state as it is found in Foucault's studies of governmentality. Habermas boldly exclaims Foucault’s “theory of power has shown itself to be a dead end” (Habermas 1990, 296). This is a relatively interesting argument to make, and the assertions that ground it in the prior lecture are quite compelling (Habermas 1990, 268). Foucault, Habermas and Evaluation[1] STEPHEN KEMMIS Deakin University, Australia ABSTRACT Educational evaluation may be understood in terms of what Michel Foucault describes as 'discursive practice', yet this perspective may lead to a kind of despair if evaluation technologies are seen as no more than an expression of 'the will to power'.

Foucault is concerned with giving a genealogical account of the diffusion of power, whereas Habermas is concerned with creating a political philosophy based on the recognition of the communicative capacities of rational human beings, which Foucault neglects.

Foucault, however, uses his critical tool of power analytics to 118 Foucault and the Foucault Effect That importance is supported not only by social and political theory but by historical-empirical evidence as well (Putnam 1993). Yet, Habermas and his sympathizers remained skeptical.

Accepted wisdom has it that Foucault is an anti-humanist who rejects the emancipatory ideals of the Enlightenment. Habermas, by contrast, is portrayed as the arch defender of those ideals.
